SUMMARY:As Bright As Heaven - on Death and Dying
DESCRIPTION:Presenters Tish Butson\, Shona Louis\, and Janine McNaul discuss Susan Meissner’s novel As Bright As Heaven. Set in 1918 Philadelphia\, as troops continue to leave the U.S. to fight in Europe and the Spanish flu takes hold of their city\, a family that has already suffered the loss of a child meets the challenges and turmoil of a life they could never have imagined. \nTish\, Shona\, and Janine all have experience in palliative care\, and bring their knowledge to a book club-like discussion about the many ways death affects individuals\, families\, neighbourhoods\, and the larger society around them. Guests will be able to participate in a general conversation moderated by TSF Board Secretary Holly Lillico. \nPlease note that Townsend Smith Foundation does not offer counselling and that this session is aimed at people who are interested in discussing our common concern – how we meet adversity and live meaningful lives that must inevitably end. \nJanine McNaul is a death doula who has been a hospice volunteer and worked with RCMP Victim Services. Her personal experience of stillbirth has opened her to hearing the stories of others who are grieving. \nShona Louis trained with Janine as a death doula\, and is a hospice nurse in South Halton. She wants to de-stigmatize the topic of death\, and bring the resources of “the village” to help at the end of life. \nTish Butson is a retired nurse with experience in palliative and geriatric care and many years volunteer service with Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre\, Halton Elder Services Advisory Committee\, and Halton CARP. A former TSF Board Director\, Tish is eager to see a hospice residence built for the growing population of North Halton.

SUMMARY:Spirituality & Religion Workshop
DESCRIPTION:People practice in different ways while connecting to their beliefs. Join us to learn more about religion and spirituality: from practices\, to differences and similarities. Is there a real connection between religion and spirituality? Some people argue that the two are very different (types of beliefs). Others notice some very important similarities which bear closer consideration. Those beliefs guide people’s lifestyle and the culture of their emotions\, feelings and brain. Discover the background and geographic areas of people practising religion or spirituality\, their cultures and traditions. \nFeatured Speaker: Hanadi Al Masri is the Director of Social Innovation & Enterprises at HMC Connections. She has worked with HMC Connections for the last 19 years. (Arrived to Canada as a skilled immigrant.) She has presented many conferences\, such as Safe Guarding Halton Forum\, a Shared Responsibility of Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse\, Halton Showcase\, Trauma of Exile\, and Challenges to Settlement with the Canadian Centre of Victims of Torture in Toronto\, Equity and Social Justice. She provides (different) consultation on immigration reform\, settlement services and Cultural Barriers Analysis to improve access and reduce barriers within integration of newcomers to Canada\, and works effectively with the Ministry of Transportation and Halton Regional Police on Road Safety Education and awareness within cultural groups. Hanadi provides training sessions on Diversity & Cultural Competence\, Cultural Awareness\, Best Practices for Newcomer’s Integration and Settlement and has developed a user-defined Service Model of Case Management. \nHanadi has established a strong understanding on addressing cultural practices for ethnically\ndiverse families within mental health services\, (delivery module) and the need for cultural navigators to decrease the stigma associated with mental health access and awareness for ethnic communities. Her passion is DIVERSITY & INCLUSION. \n\n
